Most English learners can read far more than they can say. If you understand English but your mind goes blank when you have to speak, the tool you practice with matters more than how many minutes you put in. This guide compares the English speaking practice tools people ask about most in 2026, what each one actually trains, what it costs, and how much you can use for free.
Prices were checked on each tool's own website on November 2, 2026. Where a company does not publish prices on its site, we quote the US App Store listing and say so. Prices change with region and promotions, so treat them as a guide.
How we compared them
We looked at four things that decide whether a speaking tool helps:
- What you practice: free conversation, repeating sentences, pronunciation drills, or building your own sentences from a prompt.
- What the feedback is based on: whether the tool knows what you were trying to say, or only reacts to what you said.
- How easy it is to start: sign-up, app install, and whether a nervous learner can begin without inventing a topic.
- Price and free use: what you pay, and what you get without paying.

1. PracticeSpeaking: the easiest way to improve your spoken English
PracticeSpeaking is English speaking practice without the blank mind. Instead of asking you to think of a topic, it gives you a short real-life moment, such as being late for work, losing a suitcase at the airport or answering an interview question. You listen, then retell it out loud in your own words from short notes.
Retelling sits between the two usual methods. Free chat makes you decide what to say and how to say it at the same time, which is exactly when most learners freeze. Repeat-after-me is easy but only copies someone else's sentence. In a retell the story gives you what to say, and you build every sentence yourself, which is the skill a real conversation needs.
Because there is an original, the feedback can be precise. It quotes what you said, crosses out what didn't work, shows how a native speaker would say the same thing, and explains why in your own language. Your score out of 100 is counted from the points you covered, your mistakes, natural phrasing, pauses and whether each word is understood. Your accent itself is never marked down. Then you say the story again and compare both takes.
- Content: everyday scenarios from easy to hard, such as work, travel and making friends, plus IELTS speaking practice for Part 2.
- Notes at three levels: detailed, keywords only, or in your own language.
- Price: free to start with no sign-up; Pro is $29 every 3 months or $79 a year, with an email 3 days before each renewal.
- Privacy: recordings are not kept and never used to train AI.

2. Speak
Speak is a language app built around an expert-written curriculum: you learn phrases, practice them, then use them in AI conversations. It teaches several languages, not only English. Speak does not publish prices on its website; on the US App Store, Premium is $17.99 a month or $83.99 a year, and there is a 7-day free trial.
3. ELSA Speak
ELSA focuses on pronunciation and speaking, with instant feedback on sounds, AI role-plays and exam preparation for tests such as IELTS. It offers a free tier and a 7-day Premium trial. Prices are not shown on its website; on the US App Store, Premium is $19.99 a month or $99.99 a year.
4. Praktika
Praktika lets you talk to AI avatar tutors that correct your grammar, word choice and pronunciation as you chat. Its website advertises a price of about $8 a month and says you can begin a free conversation anytime. It runs as a mobile app.
5. Loora
Loora is an AI English conversation partner with feedback on grammar and pronunciation, including topics like business English and job interviews. Its website does not list prices; it says plans cost less per month than one hour with a human tutor, and it offers a free trial in the app.
6. Cambly
Cambly connects you with human tutors for video lessons, one-to-one or in small groups. It prices plans by lesson time; Small Groups regularly start from $24 a month, and a first 30-minute trial lesson costs $1. You need to book time and talk to a stranger, which suits some learners and stops others.
7. BoldVoice
BoldVoice is accent training: short video lessons from accent coaches combined with AI feedback on your sounds. It targets speakers who are already fluent and want to sound clearer. The first 7 days are free; on the US App Store a year of Premium is $149.99.
8. Gliglish
Gliglish is an AI tutor you talk to by voice, with role-play situations in several languages. It works in the browser and on iOS, and gives 10 minutes of free practice a day. On the US App Store, Gliglish Plus is $29 a month or $192.99 a year.
9. ChatGPT voice
ChatGPT's voice mode lets you have an open conversation with a general AI assistant. Voice is available on the free plan with limits, and ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month. It is not a course: there is no curriculum and no score, and it cannot tell what you meant to say, so you have to judge your own mistakes.
How to choose an English speaking practice tool
Ask yourself one question: when you try to speak, what goes wrong?
- Your mind goes blank. You need practice that gives you something to say, so all your effort goes into saying it. That is what retelling does, and why PracticeSpeaking starts every round with a story instead of a topic.
- You know the words but speak in simple, stiff sentences. You need feedback against a model, so you can see the natural phrase you were missing. PracticeSpeaking compares every take with the original and gives you the native version of what you meant.
- Listeners struggle with certain words. Practice those words sentence by sentence; our free English pronunciation practice marks exactly which words were not clear, and the accent test shows which sounds stand out.
- You need it for an exam, a job or a trip. Practice the real moment: IELTS Part 2 cue cards, meeting updates, interview answers and airport conversations are all built in.
Whatever you choose, short and regular beats long and rare. Ten minutes a day of speaking out loud, with feedback you can act on, will move you further than an hour of chat once a week.
