Read this out loud

Last Thursday, my brother and I took a long drive through the countryside. We stopped at a little farm to buy fresh vegetables, warm bread, and a bottle of water. The woman there told us it would be a better day for the beach, but the weather was getting worse. Still, we laughed, sang along to the radio, and wouldn’t turn back. When we finally got home, I could hardly walk, and I was happy.

What is an accent test?

An accent test, also called an accent detector or accent checker, listens to you read a short passage and tells you which accent you sound closest to, such as American, British or Indian English. If you don’t sound like a native speaker of any of them, it tells you whether your English leans American or British. Your accent is the mix of vowel sounds, consonants, stress and rhythm you carry into English, and it comes from where and how you learned to speak.

Our accent test is an AI listener, so treat the result as a well-informed first impression, not a measurement. It also picks out the 2–3 sounds that stand out most, because those are the ones worth practicing. When the evidence is mixed, it says it can’t tell instead of guessing.

What the test listens for

The passage is written to include the sounds that differ most between accents.

Consonants

th as in “the” and “brother”, r and l, v and w.

Vowels

The vowel in “bath”, “walk” and “water”, and how long vowels last.

Word endings

-ing at the end of “getting”, and the t in “better” and “water”.

Stress and rhythm

Which syllables you lean on, and how you link words together.

Why people take an accent test

Most people take it out of curiosity, but a few reasons come up again and again.

Just curious

Someone said you sound British, or nobody can place you. One short recording gives you a first answer and the sounds behind it.

Before calls and interviews

If people keep asking where you’re from, the accent test shows which sounds stand out, so you can decide which are worth working on in English pronunciation practice.

Choosing a model to copy

Learners often mix American and British sounds. Knowing which way your English already leans makes it easier to pick one model, then copy it in English speaking practice with the matching voice.

Moving or studying abroad

Hearing which accent you sound closest to tells you what locals are likely to notice, and which words may need a second try.

How to take this English accent test online

Three quick steps.

1. Find a quiet spot

Use a quiet room and keep the microphone about a hand’s width from your mouth. Headphones with a mic work well.

2. Read the passage out loud

Tap the button and read the passage at your normal speed. Don’t perform an accent, just read it the way you naturally do.

3. Read your result

You get the accent you sound closest to, or whether your English leans American or British, plus the sounds that stand out and what to practice next. Test again any time.

Accent test FAQ

Is the accent test accurate?

It’s a good first read, not a lab measurement. An AI model listens to one short recording and compares what it hears with eight common English accents. Background noise, a weak microphone or reading very fast can all shift the result, and when the evidence is mixed we say we can’t tell. For a firmer answer, test two or three times.

How does this accent guesser work?

Think of it as “guess my accent”, done by an AI listener. You read a fixed passage that includes the sounds that differ most between accents. Instead of a person trying to guess your accent, the accent test sends the recording to an AI model that listens for those sounds and picks the closest accent from a fixed list, or tells you whether you lean American or British if none of them fits. We don’t keep your recording.

What accent do I have, and which accents can it detect?

American, British, Australian, Canadian, Irish, Scottish, South African and Indian English. If you don’t sound like a native speaker of any of them, it tells you whether your English leans American or British, and names the influence of your first language, such as Mandarin Chinese or Spanish, when it hears one clearly.

Can I get an accent percentage score?

No, on purpose. A percentage would look precise without being precise. You get the closest accent and the specific sounds behind it.

Is it free, and do I need to sign up?

Yes. You get 5 tests a day without an account, and 10 a day with a free account.

Do you have an accent, and is it a problem?

Yes, everyone has an accent, so a “do you have an accent” quiz always says yes. What matters is whether listeners understand you easily. This accent test points out the 2–3 sounds most likely to cause misunderstanding, and those are a better thing to practice than losing your accent.
